Colorado faces many of the same water impurity issues that affect other states throughout the U.S. The growth of our population and the increased demands on our water supplies strain our water resources in Colorado. There are many other reasons, including topography, geologic circumstances, industrial chemical discharge and limitations in water treatment which also impact the quality of water in Colorado. To read about these please see our water purification guide for further details.
Below is a brief list of the water impurities that are often present in the water we test. These impurities are found in different water sources, including both city and private well water, throughout Colorado.
- Calcium & Magnesium carbonates (CaCo3 & MgCo3) - Also known as water hardness
- Chlorine (CL2) & Chloramine (NH2Cl) - Used as disinfectants in city water treatment
- Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S ) - Also known as 'rotten egg' odor
- Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
- Iron (FE) - Causes red staining on fixtures and appliances
- Manganese (MN) - Causes dark and even black staining on fixtures and appliances
- Bacteria, Cysts & Viruses (eg.: e-coli, cryptosporidium, giardia, campylobacter)
- Heavy Metals (eg.: chromium, arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury)
- Trihalomethanes (Residual contaminants due to Chlorine disinfection)
- Radionuclides (Radium & Uranium)
